2024-2028 Olympics : The US bid provides « a special announcement »

This week will definitely mark a decisive milestone in the race for the organization of the Olympic and Paralympic Games of 2024 and 2028 since the adoption of the principle of dual allocation.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, accompanied by Municipal Council President Herb Wesson and Casey Wasserman, Chairperson of the Bid Committee, will speak at 5:00 pm (Pacific Daylight Time) to confirm the position of the City of Angels.

Following the discussions with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the Los Angeles authorities should remind both the fundamentals of the US nomination, and the tripartite agreement – LA, Paris and the IOC – and especially the partnership with the Olympic Movement for the likely holding of the 2028 Games.

The choice of the words of the Mayor of Los Angeles, as well as his attitude, will be interesting to study. The same applies to the journalistic treatment given to Eric Garcetti’s announcement and to the predictable communication of the IOC and the Paris 2024 Bid Committee.

Even if the formalization of the agreement will mark a major step point, it should not neglect the importance of the appointment of Lima (Peru) in September.

IOC members will thus have to ratify the agreement reached this summer, in accordance with any decision concerning the designation of a Host City of the Games.

As stipulated in Rule 18.2.4 of the Olympic Charter, the powers of the IOC Session include the election of the Host City of the Olympic Games.
